Saturary In The Farmers' Market

Thanks Cherry Street Farmers' Market for letting us display a small harvest of our ceramic greenbelt meridian Cantaloupes.  We have received supportive feedback and hope we can all take care of the world like the kids who held ceramic cantaloupes: with tender care, and with both hand.
This week, Islamic State group militants searched through the Syrian town of Palmyra and they don't have a good attitude in handling ancient objects with care. State strong Humanity!

A Cantaloupe A world

The name for cantaloupe in Mandarin Chinese is Hamigua ( gua means melon). Hami is the name of a city along the Silk Road and the eastern gateway to Xinjiang province in China.  More than 30 types of Hami melon are grown in the region, as well as grapes, watermelons, tomatoes, apricots, and more. In the summer, Yiren traveled to Xinjiang as a Fund For Teachers Fellow and to do research for the Greenbelt Meridian Project. There she tasted the best fare of fruits and vegetable including cantaloupe.

The greenbelt Meridian uses cantaloupe to symbolize the Meridian, the Earth, and water use, irrigation, fine weather, science, and agriculture as well. We pray for a peaceful solution to the conflicts between the Chinese government and the Uygurs of Xinjiang province in the far west of China.

A Land for Bison

Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, Pawhuska, Oklahoma
Became friends with Frank J. Popper on facebook! Learned Buffalo and Prairie Dog are the bookends of the prairie, due to their ecosystem creating habits. They are both, along with fire, the reason why the great Plains was once so abundant with life. Learned about the Buffalo Commons twenty plus years later and American Prairie Reserve in Montana.

A Line That Divides

Erick, Oklahoma
Marking 100 longitude across the old route 66 in Texola, Oklahoma
Making a human 100 meridian near Reydon, Oklahoma

Date: Nov 26-28, 2014
Where: Erick, Texola, Sweetwater, Cheyenne, Reydon, and Elk City along the 100 meridian in Oklahoma

The 100th Meridian West passes through North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. In the USA the 100th Meridian marks the divide between the precipitation-rich eastern part of the country and the arid western part. The west Texas and Oklahoma were ground zero for the dustbowl, an incident that reflects many of our concerns for the future. The artists also wish to celebrate the 100th Meridian’s role as the first section of a worldwide Greenbelt Meridian.

The Most Important Rock in Oklahoma

The Initial Rock is on a private land
The most important rock in Oklahoma is the Initial Point. This sandstone is located on the Murray and Garvin County line, seven miles west of Davis. It is also about a mile and a half south of historic Fort Arbuckle.  In 1866, the Reconstruction treaties required the Chickasaws and Choctaws to survey and subdivide their land east of the 98th meridian. By 1870, preparations were made for the subdivision of the Indian lands into congressional townships and sections. Indian territory was so remote from any other established base lines and meridians that the surveyors decided to establish a fictitious base line and meridian. A point near Fort Arbuckle was selected as the starting point, and a line that was surveyed north and south from that point was named the Indian Meridian. The Indian Base Line was placed about thirty-six miles north of the thirty-fourth parallel of latitude, and the intersection of these two lines was established as the Initial Point in Oklahoma.
